About Abaculus

Abaculus is an educational reference site about the world's ancient civilizations. Our goal is to explain, in plain language, where past societies flourished, how they lived, what they built, and why their achievements still matter today.

What we cover

Each entry is a self-contained dossier on a single civilization. Every dossier includes an at-a-glance fact sheet — time period, location, writing system, form of government, key achievements, and major archaeological sites — followed by seven short sections that walk through its geography, origins, society, achievements, decline, and legacy.

We organize the entries by region: Mesopotamia & the Near East, Africa, the Mediterranean & Europe, Asia, and the Americas & Oceania.

How we write

We write for general readers, not specialists. We ground every dossier in well-established historical and archaeological knowledge, and we say plainly when something is uncertain or still debated. We do not invent dates, figures, or claims, and we do not give financial, medical, or other professional advice.
